It’s finally here! After what seems like ages of planning and strategizing and preparing, the BC Summer Games are finally upon us!
The 2014 BC Summer Games, held throughout the city of Nanaimo, will welcome participants from all across BC including the Kootenays, Thompson-Okanagan, Fraser Valley, Fraser River Delta, Vancouver-Squamish, North West, Cariboo-North East, and Vancouver Island-Central Coast! Premier W.R. Bennett, who originally envisioned the games, believed in providing “an opportunity to bring all parts of BC together, large and small communities, in the spirit of sport and friendship”.
The first BC Summer Games took place in 1978, which were held in Penticton. Every year a new community is awarded as host to the BC Summer Games via a bidding process. Sports that are featured in the games include basketball, equestrian events, kayaking, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, volleyball, and more! For a complete list of the sporting events, check out the list here!
The opening ceremonies of the BC Summer Games will take place at the Rotary Stadium at 7:00pm on Thursday, July 17th. The sporting events begin Friday morning all across Nanaimo. To view the schedule of events, along with their locations, check out the official schedule here.
The games will then wrap up with the closing ceremony on Sunday, July 20 at 1:30pm, taking place again at the Rotary Stadium.
