What’s Up This Week + Farewell Summer Students!!

Well, today marks the end of summer and with that we say goodbye (sort of) to our wonderful summer students who kicked butt this year as our trusty Visitor Information Counselor’s. They put in such hard work over the past few months, we couldn’t have had a better summer with them if we asked! From contributing to the blog, to zoomin’ around the harbour on the Segway, to working in one of the oldest buildings in Nanaimo, we had the greatest time. We met people from all over the world (like Israel, Russia, and Brazil – to name a few!), heard some amazing travel stories, and received wonderful feedback from visitors who loved their stay in Nanaimo!

Laura, Jenna, and Helga are returning to school at VIU to finish up their degrees in the Tourism program while Sarah is jet-setting to Germany, France and England for three months! In fact, as of right now, she’s already landed in Frankfurt and is probably having the time of her life!

From L-R: Laura, Tiffany, Sean, Jenna, Helga, and Sarah at Nori’s for our year end staff party!

Since these girls put in such hard work all summer for the Tourism Nanaimo Blog, I thought I would revisit some of our favourite posts from each of them!

Laura: This one was a tough choice, but I have to say “Catch of the Day: Nanaimo’s Best Fish & Chips!” was my favourite post. We constantly get questions from visitors about where the best place to eat fresh, locally caught seafood, and this post of Laura’s offers some great ideas! To see more of Laura’s posts, you can check them out here.

Jenna: Even though summer is over, we still have some pretty warm weather through the month of September. Which is why my favourite post from Jenna, “Beaches, Tidal Pools & Local History!”, still offers great ideas for activities to do this month. It’s no secret, here, that we love sending visitors to Neck Point Park and Piper’s Lagoon. It’s a hot spot for enjoying scenic views, learning local history, and experiencing some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve personally ever seen. If you enjoyed her post, catch up on Jenna’s other posts here.

Helga: Another popular question, besides where to eat locally caught seafood, is where to buy Nanaimo souvenirs. My favourite post from Helga informs you on exactly where to get all your Nanaimo gifts to take back home. From the Nanaimo Museum, Hill’s Native Art Galley, Newfoundland to Nanaimo, to our very own Northfield Visitor Centre, “Nanaimo Souvenir Shoipping: Postcards, Art, Wood Carvings, and More!” has you covered. You can catch up on the rest of Helga’s posts here.

Sarah: Ahh, my blog co-runner-in-crime! Sarah and I usually co-write posts together so instead of listing my favourite blog post of hers, it seems more apropos to list my favourite experience. A few weeks ago, Sarah and I were invited to Mahle House’s annual Garden Party. The two of us had such a wonderful time conversing with wineries from all over BC, soaking in the hot summer sun, and sampling all of the heavenly-made food, obviously! To re-visit “Summer Garden Party @ The Mahle House Restaurant”, or to it read for the first time, head here!

Thanks again to Laura, Helga, Jenna, and Sarah for such a wonderful summer! You guys will be greatly missed!
