Happy Wednesday readers!
Two weeks ago we introduced you to our new meet the team series, where we’ll get to know our staff members here at Tourism Nanaimo! Last time we met Tiffany, Tourism Nanaimo’s Visitor Services Specialist. Today we introduce you to Lesley Anderson, Tourism Nanaimo’s Executive Director of Destination Management.
In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret? Its lakes & rivers – they provide amazing places to experience nature; whether it’s swimming on a hot day, paddling to a quiet spot for a picnic dinner, watching the sun sparkle against the surface as it sets or hiking along the lakeside & riverside trails in the cool shade of the forest, Nanaimo’s lakes are a gem that few who aren’t from here seem to be really aware of.
If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see? I’d recommend hiking up Mt. Benson – the view is incredible – rewarded by dinner at the Westwood Bistro (or at the Discovery Room at VIU) & an after dinner Nanaimo Bar martini at Modern Café.
Can you tell us a bit about your favourite Vancouver Island/BC vacation (summer or winter!)? There are too many to count. I love road cycling, wine & food, so anywhere I can ride quiet roads in beautiful scenery while stopping along the way to taste wine & delicious local foods ranks at the top of my list. e.g. The Comox Valley, Cowichan Valley, the Gulf Islands & the Okanagan
What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo? How many things there are to do in this town & region. Coming from Vancouver, I had outdated & incorrect perceptions about Nanaimo. There’s a vibrant restaurant scene, lots of fun arts & cultural events, beautiful parks & trails to hike, amazing lakes & rivers to swim in & a lifestyle that’s hard to beat – this surprised me & has far exceeded my expectations.
Thanks Lesley! Check back in two weeks time when we welcome back Megan to our team!
