Featured Event of the Week:

Symphony by the Sea is a FREE outdoor summer concert performed by the Vancouver Island Symphony with guest artists, Conducted and Produced by Calvin Dyck. 4000+ people attend this concert annually. Join us on Saturday, August 8 at Maffeo Sutton Park at 6:00 pm. Rain or Shine.

This week we are also featuring some of Gabriola Island’s fabulous events!

Thursday August 6 is the Concert on the Green (Gabriola) Fabulous 1980’s music featuring the ATARI RADIO STARZ, a vintage car show, Bingo, Air Canada raffle, clowns, kid’s hay rides, face painting and balloon hats and much more!  The program starts at 3 PM with a Vintage Car Show and many activities: for younger kids; for slightly older children there will be demonstrations and games with the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides; and for adults there will be Bingo in the Beer Garden, Lions Dog Guide demo and a performance by the Drumbeggar Border Morris Dancers and the Beggars Drum Band. –Gates open at 3pm. $15 per person.

And on Saturday, August 8th is the 60th Annual Salmon BBQ on Gabriola Island. This event has been a crowd pleaser for many, many years and is a fix part in Gabriola’s event calendar. Enjoy an afternoon and evening with deliciously grilled salmon and live music at the community hall. Bring a lawn chair and experience local community spirit and island hospitality. Event starts at 4pm, tickets available at the Gabriola Visitor Centre, $15 per person.

Wednesday Aug 5:

Lunchtime Music Series – Summer is the time to do lunch alfresco and take in some great live music! Grab a bite to go at one of the many delicious restaurants in the Old City Quarter, or bring your own sack lunch. On Wesley and Selby Street from 12:15-1pm, FREE admission

Bowen Road Farmers Market – This weekly farmers market features local farmers, and food vendors selling fresh and local produce and food items. Join them in celebrating local farmers from 4- 6:30pm. FREE admission

Concerts in the Park (Sunny, Honey and Wild Bill) – Nanaimo features numerous free concerts in beautiful Maffeo Sutton Park in the heart of Nanaimo right on the sea wall. Join the free fun event at the Pavilion starting at 6-7:30, FREE admission

Ladies’s Nine and Wine – This relaxed introduction to golf includes pre-game golf tips from a pro as well as on the course and a casual 9-hole scramble (no score keeping). Finish with tapas, wine, and door prizes. $49 per person.

Thursday August 6:

Highland Dancers – On Thursdays and Saturday local highland dance students add to the daily cannon firing ceremony. Accompanied by Bill the Bagpiper the group of young dancers perform classic Scottish dances in authentic costumes. Don’t miss them, they will start at 11:30am right in front of the cannons next to the Bastion. FREE admission

Nanaimo Family Bastion Tours – This 20 min tour starts immediately after the noon canon firing. Learn more about Nanaimo’s oldest building  from a local expert. By donation.

Summertime Music Series – Come down to Lois Lane this Thursday from noon to 2pm and enjoy some live music. Grab a lunch and enjoy some live music in the heart of downtown, FREE admission.

Michael Patrick & Marty Steel – Enjoy some live music from two local musicians in the northend of town. Michael Patrick, jazz guitarist and vocalist, sings beautiful covers from the great American Songbook, featuring Marty Steele, keyboardist extraordinaire. Listen to Jazz, R & B and other music styles. Starts at 7pm. FREE admission.

Historic Pub Tour – Nanaimo’s pubs are pretty famous, or is that infamous? On this fun, thirst-quenching historic tour, you get to be the judge. This historical tour through downtown Nanaimo will explore British Columbia’s fascinating liquor laws, rules and policies, and how they shaped our local community. Tour departs at 7pm, $25 per person.

Friday August 7:

Nanaimo Bastion Waterfront Farmers Market – Stroll over the market and stock up on produce or enjoy some uniquely handcrafted arts and crafts. You can enjoy this vibrant market with live music Fridays from 2-6pm, FREE admission.

Morning Star Bison Ranch Tours – Join Buffalo Bob as the conductor and narrator on a ‘locomotive” driven tour buggy where you will ride into the fields and see 2000lb Buffalo Bulls walking majestically up close and personal! Open 10-4pm, FREE Ranch admission, Train tour $20/adult, $5children

Art Lab – Saturday Studio – Art Lab will offer exploratory, hands-on workshops for kids aged 5-11 in the Nanaimo Art Gallery. Learn and experiment with new techniques and materials and let your kids be creative. Walk-ins welcome, availability permitting, $12/child, $18 for siblings.

Gabriola Island Farmers Market – Wander the market, picking up fresh baked goods and locally grown fruits and vegetables. There are also lots of opportunities to purchase lovely arts and crafts and listen to buskers. Coffee and breakfast is available on site as well. Make it a day trip on beautiful Gabriola Island and explore stunning beaches, parks, farms and studios. Market runs 10-1pm, FREE admission

Rollermania Saturday Night Smackdown Roller Derby Bout – enjoy a thrilling night of roller derby and cheer on the local Harbour City Rollers as they take on two teams in one night. Beer Garden open. Event starts at 6:30pm-9:30pm at Frank Crane Arena, $10 admission.

Sunday August 9:

Cedar Farmers Market – Explore beautiful Cedar and stop by the 50+ vendors, selling local produce and crafts. Spend some time shopping locally and listening to local live talent. The market runs from 10-2pm, FREE admission.

Lantzville Farmers Market  This weekly farmers market is located right in front of a little church. You will find everything form farm fresh produce to craft vendors. Market runs from 1:30-4pm, FREE admission.

Blues Jam – Every Sunday the “Queens” Hotel opens its doors to the best in local blues talent. Enjoy some live music in the heart of Nanaimo in an iconic venue. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Monday August 10:

Concert in the Park (Great Plains) – enjoy some live entertainment in stunning Maffeo Sutton Park in the heart of Downtown on the seawall. Grab your lunch and head to the park. Concert starts at 12:30-1:30pm, FREE admission

Daily Events:

Noon Cannon Firing – every day at noon the Nanaimo Museum will fire the historical cannon next to the Bastion to welcome visitors to Nanaimo. The firing is companied by Bill the Bagpiper (except Fridays) prior to the firing. Be sure to arrive at 11:45am at the cannons to catch the entire show. FREE admission.

Nanaimo Arts Council July Showcase – Come and enjoy this latest show in our gallery at Nanaimo North Town Centre, near the Sears store.

Nanaimo Museum Summer Exhibit – (Fashions for the 40s & 50s) From rare haute couture to daily-wear, fashions from the 1940s-50s will be featured in the Nanaimo Museum’s summer exhibit.

Nanaimo Art Gallery Spirit Gum Exhibit – A merging of costume and wearer activated through newly created and existing artworks, alongside works from the permanent collection.
