Featured Events of the Week

Longwoodstock: Celebrate summer this Saturday at Longwoodstock! They have a great lineup of 8 diverse artists waiting for you with over 7 hours of live music. Beside the music, enjoy some great local beer, cider, BBQ and other food vendors. Longwood Brewing will be featuring an exclusive event only beer, so be sure to try the new creation. There will also be yard games such as Yard Pong and Giant Jenga, temporary tattoos and so much more. Fun is pretty much guaranteed in this “Open” Beer-Fest-Style Atmosphere. Longwoodstock - Aug 15th at the Longwood Brewery

Gabriola Theatre Festival: This 4 day theatre event features a variety of different plays and events in different locations on beautiful Gabriola Island. Each day there are anywhere between 4-8 different performances, on the weekend there will also be a Pancake Breakfast. Make it a day trip from Nanaimo and take an early ferry over and explore Gabriola Island the stunning Malaspina Galleries, Twin Beaches or some of Gabriola’s many artists and artisans. Thursday evening is the opening night, but the events get really going on Friday to Sunday. Tickets are $20 per adult.

Nanaimo Fringe Festival: enjoy a great variety of live plays over a 2 week period. The event takes place each year in Nanaimo to celebrate this fun and fresh theatrical art. Catch a play or live performance in one of many unique locations all over time. There are over 50 shows over the 10 days, so there is something for everyone.

Tuesday Aug.11th:

On the Dock (Live music): Located on Protection Island at the Dinghy Dock Pub, come out and enjoy great live music in this one of a kind location on the water. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $20 and include return ferry and the show.

Family Golf Night at Fairwinds: Have some fun together as a family, with special Tuesday evening tee times (5-6pm). Prices vary between $33-$66. FREE club rentals for everyone

Wednesday Aug.12th:

Lunchtime Music Series Summer is the time to do lunch alfresco and take in some great live music! Grab a bite to go at one of the many delicious restaurants in the Old City Quarter, or bring your own brown bag lunch. On Wesley and Selby Street from 12:15-1pm, FREE admission.

Cheese Making Course in Gabriola Island: Ever wanted to learn how to make delicious Brie at home? This course explores more advanced cheese making methods. Ingredients, instructions, lunch, wine and your own wheel of Brie are included. Course runs 10:30-1:30, $100 per adult.

Bowen Road Farmers MarketThis weekly farmers market features local farmers, and food vendors selling fresh and local produce and food items. Join them in celebrating local farmers from 4- 6:30pm. FREE admission

Concerts in the Park (Michael Wood Band):  Nanaimo features numerous free concerts in beautiful Maffeo Sutton Park in the heart of Nanaimo right on the sea wall. Join the free fun event at the Pavilion starting at 6-7:30, FREE admission

Thursday, Aug. 13th:

Highland Dancers: On Thursdays and Saturday local highland dance students add to the daily cannon firing ceremony. Accompanied by Bill the Bagpiper the group of young dancers perform classic Scottish dances in authentic costumes. Don’t miss them, they will start at 11:30am right in front of the cannons next to the Bastion. FREE admission

Nanaimo Family Bastion Tours: This 20min tour starts immediately after the noon canon firing. Learn more about Nanaimo’s oldest building from a local expert. By donation.

Summertime Music Series: Come down to Lois Lane this Thursday from noon to 2pm and enjoy some live music. Grab a lunch and enjoy some live music in the heart of downtown, FREE admission.

Friday, Aug. 14th:

Nanaimo Bastion Waterfront Farmers MarketStroll over the market and stock up on produce or enjoy some uniquely handcrafted arts and crafts. You can enjoy this vibrant market with live music Fridays from 2-6pm, FREE admission.

Morning Star Bison Ranch Tours: Join Buffalo Bob as the conductor and narrator on a ‘locomotive” driven tour buggy where you will ride into the fields and see 2000lb Buffalo Bulls walking majestically up close and personal! Open 10-4pm, FREE Ranch admission, Train tour $20/adult, $5 children.

VI Raiders vs Kamloops Broncos: Cheer for our local Football Team the VI Raiders as they take on the team from Kamloops. Game starts at 4pm at Caledonia Park. $12 per adult, $5 for students.

Gabriola Island Farmers Market: Wander the market, picking up fresh baked goods and locally grown fruits and vegetables. There are also lots of opportunities to purchase lovely arts and crafts and listen to buskers. Coffee and breakfast is available on site as well. Make it a day trip on beautiful Gabriola Island and explore stunning beaches, parks, farms and studios. Market runs 10-1pm, FREE admission.

Sunday, Aug. 2nd:

Cedar Farmers Market:  Explore beautiful Cedar and stop by the 50+ vendors, selling local produce and crafts. Spend some time shopping locally and listening to local live talent. The market runs from 10-2pm, FREE admission.

Lantzville Farmers MarketThis weekly farmers market is located right in front of a little church. You will find everything form farm fresh produce to craft vendors. Market runs from 1:30-4pm, FREE admission.

Blues Jam: Every Sunday the “Queens” Hotel opens its doors to the best in local blues talent. Enjoy some live music in the heart of Nanaimo in an iconic venue. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Daily Events:

Noon Cannon Firing: every day at noon the Nanaimo Museum will fire the historical cannon next to the Bastion to welcome visitors to Nanaimo. The firing is companied by Bill the Bagpiper (except Fridays) prior to the firing. Be sure to arrive at 11:45am at the cannons to catch the entire show. FREE admission.

Nanaimo Museum Summer ExhibitFrom rare haute couture to daily-wear, fashions from the 1940s-50s will be featured in the Nanaimo Museum’s summer exhibit.

Nanaimo Art Gallery Spirit Gum Exhibit: A merging of costume and wearer activated through newly created and existing artworks, alongside works from the permanent collection.

Westwood Lake Swimming: Westwood Lake is one Nanaimo’s nicest swimming lakes. During the summer months there is a life guard on duty daily from 12-6pm. So grab a beach towel and spend some time at the lake. It’s FREE!
