Featured Event of the Week

VIEX (Vancouver Island Exhibition) Friday to Sunday: This Year’s theme is “Country Scenes and Children’s Dreams”. This three day event of displays, demos, competitions, family fun, awesome rides and great live music will attract over 20,000 visitors. The VIEX has a great lineup secured with Daniel Wesley on Friday nights, Headpins playing the stage on Saturday evening and Aaron Pritchett ending the lineup on Sunday afternoon. These three are just a few of a full entertainment schedule. But live music is not the only attraction; there will be various equestrian competition, displays and rides for the entire family. Tuesday August 18    

Fin de Fiesta Flamenco (Gabriola Island) Enjoy this evening of fun and incredible Flamenco Dancing from this Spanish and American dance ensemble. Dancers are accompanies by a live guitarist, Dennis Duffin and LA based singer, Daniel Azcarate. Gabriola Community Hall; Tickets $17, $20 at the door.

Wednesday August 19

Lunchtime Music Series Summer is the time to do lunch alfresco and take in some great live music! Grab a bite to go at one of the many delicious restaurants in the Old City Quarter, or bring your own sack lunch. On Wesley and Selby Street from 12:15-1pm, FREE admission

Cheese Making Course (Gabriola Island) Have you ever wanted to learn how to make delicious Feta at home? This class is a taste, touch and feel type class which includes instructions and cultures to make you own at home as well as tasting the cheeses made in class. Course runs 10-1pm, $65 per adult.

Bowen Road Farmers Market This weekly farmers market features local farmers, and food vendors selling fresh and local produce and food items. Join them in celebrating local farmers from 4- 6:30pm. FREE admission

Concerts in the Park (Drs. of Rock ‘n; Roll) Nanaimo features numerous free concerts in beautiful Maffeo Sutton Park in the heart of Nanaimo right along the waterfront walkway. Join the free fun event at the Lions Pavilion starting at 6:00 pm until 7:30, FREE admission.

Thursday August 20

Wellington Cemetery Tours This tour will feature one of Nanaimo’s most hidden cemeteries and highlight the history of Wellington and intriguing stories of the people who lived there. Tour runs from 10:00-10:45am, registration required, $10 per person.

Highland Dancers On Thursday & Saturday local highland dance students add to the daily cannon firing ceremony. Accompanied by Bill the Bagpiper the group of young dancers perform classic Scottish dances in authentic costumes. Don’t miss them! They will start at 11:30am right in front of the cannons next to the Bastion. FREE admission.

Summertime Music Series Come down to Lois Lane this Thursday from noon to 2pm and enjoy some live music. Grab a lunch and enjoy some live music in the heart of downtown, FREE admission.

Am I a Grownup Yet? This one woman show by Grayson Morris is part of the Nanaimo Fringe Festival 2015, featuring live plays and performances all over time. Grayson is a stand-up comedian, storyteller, and puppeteer from Asheville, North Carolina. Show starts at 8:50pm, $12 at the Harbour City Theatre. Baird, Black and White Trio in Concert The trio is a melding of three of Canada’s most creative musical minds. The musicians take inspiration from a multitude of influences and use their improvisatory skills to create a unique musical tapestry. Concert starts at 8pm, $15/adult or $20 at the door, at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music.

Nanaimo Bastion Waterfront Farmers Market Stroll over the market and stock up on produce or enjoy some uniquely handcrafted arts and crafts. You can enjoy this vibrant market with live music Fridays from 2-6pm, FREE admission.

World Choir Championships Winner- Angel Ambassador BC Tour The GuangDong Experimental Middle School Choir will feature an eclectic vocal selection of songs. This concert is sure to have a great audience laughing, tapping their feet, and maybe even shedding a tear or two… Come out and enjoy a spectacular night of choral music presented by the incomparable “Angel Ambassadors” ranked Top 3 in the World. Adventure Yoga: Let’s Take a Hike If you are looking to connect body and soul during your vacation, this guided hike and adventure yoga might be exactly what you are searching for. Please preregister, tours leaves at 9am sharp at the Burma Road access to Linley Valley, $25/adult.

Gabriola Island Farmers Market Wander the market, picking up fresh baked goods and locally grown fruits and vegetables. 4th Annual Community Block Party This fun event with games and activities such as the Romper Room Climbing Wall, Bouncy Castles, Minute to Win It Games, and much, much, more is a great way to spend an afternoon with the family.

Classics and Cake Western Edge will serve up some of the greatest plays and stage musicals of all time in large-screen high-definition video versions recorded before a live audience. Cedar Farmers Market Explore beautiful Cedar and stop by the 50+ vendors, selling local produce and crafts. Spend some time shopping locally and listening to local live talent. The market runs from 10-2pm, FREE admission.

Lantzville Farmers Market This weekly farmers market is located right in front of a little church. You will find everything form farm fresh produce to craft vendors. Market runs from 1:30-4pm, FREE admission.

Blues Jam Every Sunday the “Queens” Hotel opens its doors to the best in local blues talent. Enjoy some live music in the heart of Nanaimo in an iconic venue. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Monday August 24

Concerts in the Park (TerraZetto) Nanaimo features numerous free concerts in beautiful Maffeo Sutton Park in the heart of Nanaimo right on the sea wall. Join the free fun event at the Pavilion starting at 12:30-1:30, FREE admission

Daily Events

Noon Cannon Firing Every day at noon the Nanaimo Museum will fire the historical cannon next to the Bastion to welcome visitors to Nanaimo. The firing is companied by Bill the Bagpiper (except Fridays) prior to the firing. Be sure to arrive at 11:45am at the cannons to catch the entire show. FREE admission.

Nanaimo Museum Summer Exhibit (Fashions for the 40s & 50s) From rare haute couture to daily-wear, fashions from the 1940s-50s will be featured in the Nanaimo Museum’s summer exhibit.

Nanaimo Art Gallery Spirit Gum Exhibit A merging of costume and wearer activated through newly created and existing artworks, alongside works from the permanent collection.

Westwood Lake Swimming Westwood Lake is one Nanaimo’s nicest swimming lakes. During the summer months there is a life guard on duty daily from 12-6pm. So grab a beach towel and spend some time at the lake. It’s FREE!
