Giving Back (and feeling great about it)

Hi all – Kara here.

There is just something wonderful about the holiday season that makes people want to share their love and give back to their community. There are so many great programs to choose from. Here is a list of 5 ideas in Nanaimo to get you started on your volunteer journey:

Operation Red Nose

Get a group of 3 friends together and you can volunteer for a night to help people and their vehicles get home safe and sound. If you don’t want to do the driving there are other opportunities such as phone operator, dispatcher or you can even apply to be the Rudy the Mascot – how cool is that? Operation Red Nose provides an excellent alternative to drinking and driving during the holiday season. Proceeds from this Nanaimo event support our local youth athletes through programs such as PacificSport.

Christmas Kettle Campaign

Sign up to be a “Bell Ringer” with The Salvation Army for their Christmas Kettle campaign. You pick a day and time that you are available and the kettle coordinator will set you up with a 2-3 hour shift. It is a great way to help raise funds for your local community and family services programs.

Hamperville Nanaimo is a partnership between Loaves and Fishes Food Bank and the Salvation Army to distribute Christmas Hampers in the Nanaimo area. You can help gather food and cash donations and distribute to the less fortunate in the community at Christmas time. There are lots of opportunities available.

Festival of Trees

If you are unable to commit to a specific date and time to volunteer there are always plenty of fun community fundraising events that you and the whole family can participate in. Check out the Festival of Trees at Nanaimo North Town Centre from Nov 20 – January 2. You can view these beautifully decorated trees and for a small donation you can vote for your favorite. Proceeds go towards the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

CDC –  Christmas Gift Wrapping

The Nanaimo Child Development Centre has a gift wrapping station at Woodgrove Centre during the month of December. If you have that flare for gift wrapping – you know who you are – then this is a perfect opportunity for you to give back to your community.

Feel free to share your favorite place to volunteer or charitable event to attend in Nanaimo. We would love to hear!

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas,

  1. What a great post! Thank you for highlighting the many amazing community initiatives happening around Nanaimo! Animal lovers may be interested in getting their pet’s photos with Santa. Spirit’s Mission Rescue, an organization that helps companion animals in remote, northern BC communities, is putting on three photo sessions in Bosley’s locations across Nanaimo. Sessions take place on November 21, November 28 and December 5. More information is available here:
