What’s Up in Nanaimo This Week: Feb. 9-14

10:30-2:30pm: Cheese Making Course, Gabriola, $100/adult reservations required

This is your chance to learn how to make your own cheese. On the agenda this week are hard pressed cheeses and Panir. Enjoy lunch featuring these cheeses and wine.

3:00-6:00pm: Island Roots Farmers Market, Pleasant Valley Social Centre, FREE

Visit Nanaimo’s only indoor winter farmers’ market! Local vendors provide healthy, fresh, delicious locally grown and produced foods, as well as some locally made artisan crafts.

7:00pm: Nanaimo Clippers vs Cowichan Valley Capitals, Frank Crane Arena, $5-20

Cheer on our local Junior “A” hockey team as they take on their island rivals from the south.

5:30-8:00pm: VI Symphony: Women of Note Event, Port Theatre, $25 donation

Go behind the scenes of the VI Symphony with Concertmaster Calvin Dyck and listen to samples of two programs followed by networking and appies, with a no host bar.


2:00-4:00pm: Black History Month Opening Ceremony, Nanaimo Harbourfront Library (downtown), Suggested donation $10

The kick-off event for this year’s Black History Month celebration features International Acoustic Guitarist Daniel Gerrard and light refreshments. Everyone is welcome.

6:00-9:00pm: Valentine’s Dinner Cooking Class, Lucky’s Liquor Store, $80/adult

Here is a last minute chance to learn how to prepare a fabulous 5 course meal for your valentine on Sunday. Enjoy a relaxed demo, five course meal and wine pairings.

7:00-10:00pm: Friday Fun at Minnoz, Minnoz Lounge, FREE

Enjoy and evening of live music and excellent food and local wines, spirits and beers. Visit the newly renovated restaurant in the heart of downtown. Reservations recommended.

7:00pm: 11th Annual Vancouver Island Short Film Festival, Malaspina Theatre, $15

The opening night of this event will feature a selection of different short films, followed by live music by Boomshack.


8:00pm: The ENABLERS Valentines Dance, German Hall, $15

Get your dancing shoes out and have a fun evening with The ENABLERS playing a mix of rock, blues, reggae, disco, country and many more.

The event features a variety of short films followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

7:00-10:00: The Victor Anthony Trio-Dance Band, Gabriola Community Hall $24/door

The band will have you on your feet dancing Swing, Blues and Tonga. Price includes a dance lesson, snacks and punch.

7:30pm: Music and Spoken Word (VI Symphony), Port Theatre, $38-67
