Stay downtown after your walk on March 12th – wander around and check out the shops downtown, head to one of the great restaurants (there are so many great ones to choose from) and then come see Barrage 8 – one of Festival Nanaimo’s  Signature Events. The performance in Nanaimo is the Canadian premiere! Barrage 8, features a string octet of five violins, and viola, cello and bass.

Drums and percussion enhance the music of the young hip performers. Add to the mix choreography, lights and LED screens and the group offers up a thrilling and emotionally charged, high energy choreographed theatrical spectacle with musical styles that include Classical, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Folk and Worldbeat.  This truly amazing show happens at the 7:30 pm at the Port Theatre on Saturday, March 12.  Here is a sampling of what you will experience at the performance:

So, here’s a suggestion. Check out one of the great hotels that are Festival Nanaimo Community Partners – Coast Bastion Hotel, The Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel and Travelodge Nanaimo – and spend the night here. Meander downtown for breakfast, a walk by the harbour and then head to the Port Theatre at 2:30 pm for the Janina Fialkowska Solo Piano performance. This gifted pianist is presented by the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music.  Enjoy this once in a life time opportunity to see one of the globe’s top Chopin performers. Vancouver Island concert goers will support the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music by attending this concert, which in turn will help to raise funds for Nanaimo’s community non-profit charitable music school. Tickets at the Port Theatre.
