Featured Events: 7th Annual Isle of the Arts Festival, March 31- April 10, Gabriola Island

This ten-day festival is a favourite for locals and off-islanders, with more than 60 arts and culture workshops in a variety of mediums and genres including theatre, dance, music, ceramics, painting, drawing, textiles, writing, silversmithing, culinary arts, encaustic, carving, and more! And don’t miss the homesteading weekend, along with seven exciting events: the literary launch, Blossom Night Market, Artist Appreciation Party, and more



2pm & 4pm & 6pm: Historic Nanaimo Train Ride, Train Station on Wellington, $25

Island Rails is bringing their Island Explorer Excursion train to Nanaimo to celebrate their 130th anniversary. Hop on the train for this 1 hour train ride. Reservations are required.

7:00-10:00pm: Friday Fun at Minnoz, Minnoz Lounge, FREE

Enjoy a great evening of live music and some great food in this newly renovated restaurant.

7:00 & 9:00pm: The Laugh Lounge, Old City Station Pub, $10

Come and laugh with 3-6 comedians. Sandy Danto from LA and Kathleen McGee form Vancouver are this month’s featured comedians.

7:30pm: Buying the Moose (Play), Cedar Community Hall, $20

The play offers rollicking fun based on astute observations on the differences between how men and women think and the resulting miscommunication between the sexes. Before all the problems are resolved, secrets that the characters would have preferred remain private are revealed, and the audience learns the meaning of Buying the Moose


8:00pm: Rend, Isobel Trigger & Mr Goshness (live music), Tiger Mountain Music (Lantzville), $15

Spend an evening of great live music with three original Canadian acts.


9:00-12:00pm: NS3’s Science Studio (Drop-In), 3004 Departure Bay Road, $4/child

9:30-12:30pm: Art Lab Studio, Nanaimo Art Gallery, $12/child

Let your kids connect with artists, experiment with materials, learn new techniques, and have fun with art making.


10:00-3:00pm: Island Rail 130th Anniversary Event, Nanaimo Train Station

2016 marks the 130th Anniversary of Island Rail. This family friendly event includes tours of the train, music and fun for train enthusiasts of all ages.

1pm & 2pm: The Great Balanzo, Malaspina Theatre, $10

TheatreOne’s Just Kidding for Kids presents The Great Balanzo. It’s an exciting circus performance for all ages, bringing a classic circus style to the stage.

7:30pm: Unity Nanaimo Music Event, Unity of Nanaimo, $20

Featuring: Amy Bishop, who will wow you with rollicking road songs and soulful ballads. And singer-songwriter Gary Lynn Floyd, playing a blend of pop, country, rhythm and blues.

7:30pm: Anne of Green Gables (Musical), Port Theatre, $35

The South Island Musical Theatre Society presents the classic tale of Anne, who rises from destitution to happiness in the farm country entirely by virtue of her pluck and personality.


7:30pm: Lorraine Min (Pianist), Phoenix Auditorium at the Haven (Gabriola), $20

Steinway Artist and critically acclaimed pianist, Lorraine Min has dazzled audiences internationally with her poetic artistry and brilliant virtuosity. See her on beautiful Gabriola Island, just a short ferry ride from Nanaimo.

8:00pm: Comedy Night, Lantzville Pub, $15

Be prepared to laugh with Sandy Danto  & Kathleen McGee.

9:00pm-1:00am: Robertson (live music), The Nanaimo Bar, $5

Robertson the former front-man singer songwriter and guitar player for Bullfrog will be bringing his solo show to The Nanaimo Bar with special guests the Sound Excursion Project.



10 & 11am: Nanaimo Run to Conquer Cancer (5km run/walk & 1km kids run), Swy-A-Lana Park, $25/adult, $10/child, $50/family

Team Tour de Cure of the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer is pleased to bring you the second annual Nanaimo 5km Run/Walk and Children’s 1km Run to Conquer Cancer benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation. It’s not too late to register and run for a great cause.

10:30am: Cheese Making Course, Madd Acres Farm (Gabriola), $100

Join Paula in the ancient art of cheese making and learn how to craft your own homemade cheese at her Madd Acres farm on Gabriola Island. The course includes lunch and wine Complimentary Ferry pick up/drop off is available.

12:00pm: 2016 Nanaimo Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, Cinnebar Trail, $30

The BC’s premiere grassroots race series spanning the length of Vancouver Island is stopping in Nanaimo. Join the fun and register for one of the different course levels (beginners, intermediate, and expert).

1:30pm: NatureKids Explorer Day, Linley Valley Park (Burma Rd entrance), FREE

Nature Mentor and environmental educator Travis Barrington will teach kids and families all about decomposers, composting critters and you’ll see what lives below the surface of Cottle Lake.

2:30pm: Anne of Green Gables (Musical), Port Theatre, $35

4:00-8:00pm: Sunday Blues Jam, The Queens, $5

This has become a premier Blues event attracting fans and performing Blues artists all over the island and beyond.
