What’s Up in Nanaimo: May 12-18

FEATURED EVENT: Royal Caribbean “Explorer of the Seas” Visits Nanaimo on Wednesday, May 18th

Come down to the Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal on Wednesday, May 18th, and mix and mingle with the almost 4,000 passengers and crew of the “Explorer of the Seas”. Nanaimo is their next stop after leaving Seattle, and we are so excited to host them!  Here are some things happening that day:

  • Helijet will be on-site with their Sikorsky aircraft for viewing (in between flights)
  • Island Radio broadcasting live on location
  • Cannon firing @ the Bastion will be at 11am, 12pm & 1pm
  • The BIG Bathtub and some racing tubs will be on-site down at the terminal building. Climb in and take some selfies!
  • RCMP will don their red serge and be available for photos and chats
  • Classic Car Show 10am – 2pm in Diana Krall Plaza
  • Take a selfie in the giant #ExploreNanaimo postcard in front of the ship
  • Bastion Waterfront Farmers’ Market will be open in Pioneer Waterfront Plaza
  • Tourism Nanaimo and DNBIA staff/volunteers available to answer questions on-site as well as around downtown streets

The cruise ship terminal building is open to the public on cruise ship days. Come down, check it out and say hi to the friendly Tourism Nanaimo staff working inside the terminal building! It’s going to be a fun day!

Lulu Performing Arts is pleased to present “Romance in Paris” featuring Helena Jung & Carter Johnson, a cello piano duo, performing two famous Cello Sonatas by Chopin and Franck.

The 50-plus member Malaspina Choir will be joining forces with The Victoria Brass and organist Peter Orme in a performance of both classical and contemporary music at their annual spring concert in May.

Nobuntu, Sun @2:30pm, Port Theatre, $55

The Zimbabwe Music Society is pleased to present international artists, Nobuntu, 5 part women’s Acappella Ensemble from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe on their Canadian Tour! The Cowichan Tribes Dancers and Mbira Spirit will be opening the shows.

Seasoned stand-up comedians, who are survivors, use humour as a celebration of resiliency to connect with an audience looking for big, cathartic laughs. This explosive show puts faces and stories to a taboo epidemic with nameless victims. It’s funny, raw and human.
