Featured Event: Symphony by the Sea. Sat @ 6 PM. Maffeo Sutton Park. FREE.

The Vancouver Island Symphony is bringing back this great free family event on August 6th at 6 p.m. Of course the popular “1812 Overture” is on the bill and the audience is asked to “provide cannon shots at the end of the piece by popping paper bags – so don’t forget to bring your paper bag.”

Snowbirds Airshow, Wed @6pm, Maffeo Sutton Park, FREE

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds (431 Squadron) are Ambassadors to the CH.I.L.D. Foundation, and they will be performing a full aerial show lasting approx. 40min. Don’t miss this great show of unbelievable aerial formations and flyovers. The show can be seen all along the harbour front. The show is free, but donations are welcome to raise funds for C.H.I.L.D. Souvenirs will be sold in the park.

Gabriola Lions Club presents its 20th Annual Concert on the Green featuring the winner of the Top Canadian Tribute Title, Elvis Elite. There is ample free parking, hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks, beer garden, as well as a silent auction. Join us for a great afternoon and evening of music, fun and laughs!

Historic Pub Tour, meet at the Bastion, Thur @6:45pm, $25

You get two funky old pubs, loads of historic and quirky facts about our ever-evolving liquor laws in BC, beer, a slice of Mambo’s pizza and an eclectic guide to bring it all to life!

Newcastle Island Walking Tour & Salmon BBQ. Sun @ 10 AM. Newcastle Island. BBQ: Adult $50, Child $25; Ferry: Adult $9, Child $6. Begins at the Totem Pole where you will enjoy the regular tour of storytelling and a nature walk. Once the tour is over, you will enjoy eating a traditionally cooked BBQ salmon while the Snuneymuxw chef will take you through the process of cooking traditionally and speak of the teachings handed down through the generations. Tours are approximately 2.5 hours, pre-booking required.

Nanaimo Art Gallery presents: Trusses. Thurs – Sun @ 10 Am. Nanaimo Art Gallery. By Donation. Trusses is an exhibition of works by contemporary artists and architects that explore how buildings resonate through their uses and their interactions with other forms of culture.

The Story Behind the Artifact. Daily @ 10AM. Nanaimo Museum. $0.75 – $2. The artifacts on exhibit range from ordinary household objects to those that have survived fatal accidents. They cover hundreds of years of Nanaimo’s history, from First Nations stone tools to surveying instruments used up to the 1990’s.

Join the ceremonial cannon firing which is accompanied by Bill Poppy, the Nanaimo bagpipe icon.


Cruise Ship, Fri @ all day, Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal

Nanaimo will welcome the luxury cruise liner Crystal Serenity in their inaugural visit to the harbour city.

Highland Dancers, Thurs & Sat @ 11:30 AM, net to the Bastion, FREE

Twice a week the cannon firing is accompanied by several local highland dance students. Be sure to be there early as they start at 11:30 a.m. before the actual cannon firing ceremony.

Preview Night at Nanaimo Fringe Festival. Wed @ 7 PM, Harbour City Theatre. FREE. International and local theatre companies will be showcasing their new scripts, obscure and edgy material to our stages.

Annual Hiroshima Lantern Ceremony, Sat @8pm, Maffeo Sutton Park, FREE

Come down to this stunning park and join the ceremony and some folk dancing and music. Lanterns will be lunched at dusk.
